Find. Verify. Analyze. Execute.
Four steps, in order, every time. The same discipline applies to every engagement — a single asset, a revenue system, an operating decision or an entire operating system. The steps do not change; only the subject does.
Surface the opportunity. Name the real objective.
Most work fails at the start: the wrong question, an objective nobody wrote down, a constraint nobody named. Step one makes the problem explicit before anyone spends a dollar on it.
- Surface opportunity. Scan the markets, records and channels where mispriced assets and unworked problems actually appear — not just the obvious feeds.
- Define the actual objective. Write down what a good outcome is, in numbers where possible, before any work begins. "Better" is not an objective.
- Name the constraint. Budget, timeline, eligibility, capacity — the binding limit gets stated up front, because it decides what is worth pursuing.
- Scope the decision. Identify who decides, what evidence they need, and what would make the whole effort moot.
Check reality before trusting it.
Listings are stale. Summaries drift. Rules change without notice. Verification means going to the record itself and reading it as of today — and being willing to lose the idea if the record disagrees.
- Primary sources. The original filing, the actual listing, the governing document — never a secondhand summary when the source itself can be read.
- Current status and dates. Confirm the thing still exists in the state claimed, as of a named date. Evidence expires; a verification carries its timestamp.
- Eligibility and rules. Read the terms, the fine print and the qualifying criteria before modeling anything. A deal you cannot legally enter is not a deal.
- Kill the claim that fails. When verification contradicts the thesis, the thesis dies — in writing, with the reason recorded so it is not resurrected later.
Model the economics. Stress the downside.
Analysis is not enthusiasm with a spreadsheet. It is all-in economics, honest downside scenarios and pre-committed limits — so the decision is made before emotion arrives at the table.
- Model the economics. All-in cost, realistic value range and the path between them — including the fees, taxes, transport and time that casual math ignores.
- Stress the downside. Assume the worse comp, the slower exit, the hidden defect. If the position only works in the good scenario, that is the finding.
- Set ceilings and thresholds. A maximum price, a walk-away point and a decision gate — written before the auction, negotiation or build begins, and honored.
Move with controls. Keep the record.
A decision without execution is a memo. Execution without controls is a gamble. Step four turns the analysis into a controlled, measurable move — and feeds what happened back into the method.
- Move with controls. Act inside the ceilings and gates set in analysis. Speed comes from preparation, not from skipping the checks.
- Measure. Track the outcome against the model — actual cost, actual timeline, actual result — not against the story told afterward.
- Keep the written record. What was decided, on what evidence, at what date. The record is what makes the next decision faster and the last one auditable.
- Learn. Every variance between model and outcome becomes a rule, so the same mistake is not paid for twice.
The rules the method runs on.
These are not aspirations. They are the working standards every PAYNE engagement is held to, and clients are invited to hold us to them.
- Every claim carries its evidence. A recommendation names its sources and its verification date, or it is labeled an opinion.
- Uncertainty is stated, not styled away. Confidence levels are said out loud. A guess formatted like a fact is still a guess.
- A kill is a result, not a failure. Finding out an opportunity does not work — before money moves — is the method doing its job.
- Buttons and promises only exist if they work. No fake scale, no decorative features, no commitment made that the system behind it cannot keep.
